Transportation Specialist II

The Cedar Rapids Mill started operations in 1995 and is the largest 100% recycled paper mill outside of China. The Mill employs approximately 220 employees who are committed to safety and meeting the needs of customers by producing Containerboard for boxes and packaging. This position is responsible for oversite of contracted spotting service and raw materials warehouse operations. The Mill operates 24/7, unloading 150 trailers and loading 100 trailers and 7 rail cars per day.

 

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

 

The key accountabilities listed below are not to be considered all-inclusive; a team member may be required to perform additional tasks, as directed, and based on changing business needs of the company.

  • On-site coordinator for contracted spotting, shuttling, and scale operations provider, including on the ground monitoring and intervention.
  • Monitor safety, staffing, and performance.
  • Ensure incident investigations and corrective actions are executed.
  • Manage raw materials warehouse area and operations.
  • Safety and 5S.
  • Training content oversite and providing team members and their leaders performance feedback.
  • Manage bale quality program.
  • Develop and deliver on unloading targets.
  • Manage raw material inventory.
  • Arrange resources to address warehouse needs.
  • Onsite yard management
  • Monitor and manage flow and trends in truck traffic .
  • Perform over-the-road carrier incident investigations and develop and implement appropriate corrective actions.
  • Coaches safety to others and leads by example.
  • Provide coaching and guidance to process team members and contractors through daily interactions.
  • Crosstrain in other department roles  including shipping and quality in order to backfill during absences and vacations.
  • Assists other team members in the mill as necessary to minimize downtime and maintain quality.
  • Use analytic tools and skills to identify and lead data-driven improvement projects.
  • Able to support 24/7 operations
  • Provide on-call support on periodic scheduled weekends for logistics and quality team.
  • Available for occasional after hours calls and on site support during upset conditions.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS / WORKING ENVIRONMENT

  • Blend of office, manufacturing plant, warehouse, and outdoor work.
  • Must be able to wear all required safety equipment.
  • Noise levels in excess of 90 dB.
  • Heat in excess of 100°F occasionally.
  • Required to walk and stand for long durations.
  • Work in adverse weather conditions.
  • Working environment is 24/7—ability to be on-call as need and/or required.
  • Occassionally lifting: Up to 50 pounds; i.e. signs, boxes, tools, cones, etc.

 

KEY KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE

Minimum

  • ONE of the following backgrounds meet our minimum requirements:
    • Supply Chain or Engineering degree with 2+ years experience in a warehousing or manufacturing environment.
    • 2+ years in transportation industry (lot management / fleet driver supervision).
    • 2+ years warehouse operations management including hourly workforce supervision.
    • 2+ years managing an hourly workforce in a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience coaching and intervening to improve safety performance.
  • Use of positive communication skills to work through issues (i.e. negotiation skills, positive conflict resolution skills, problem solving).
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.
  • Good organizational and planning skills.
  • Demonstrated ability and willingness to grow with the operation as duties expand or change.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office.
  • Must be self-directed in daily work.

 Preferred

  • Lean Six Sigma Green Belt with experience using Lean techniques and Minitab or similar software.
  • Experience in a team-based, customer and quality-focused organization.
  • Knowledge of DOT and AAR standards.
  • Experience working with truck / rail equipment and carriers.
