This position supports International Paper’s Columbus Modified Fiber Plant (CMF), located in Columbus, Mississippi.  CMF is a vital part of International Paper’s Global Cellulose Fibers Business.  We are a converting operation that produces specialty fibers used in the production of diapers and other absorbent personal care products.

 

The Job You Will Perform:

This is an Engineering and Technical management position reporting directly to the Plant Manager.  The incumbent will serve as a member the CMF Leadership Team, provides leadership and direction to approximately 2-3 salaried employees, and is responsible for sustaining and growing a culture of Manufacturing Excellence to deliver year-over-year cost reduction.  The person in this position will continue to develop the Manufacturing Excellence (ME) organization, including entry-level REACH and Process Engineers.

The successful candidate will have two main focus areas:

  • Manufacturing Excellence (ME):  Responsible for all Manufacturing Excellence Initiatives, including strategy deployment and deliberate and continuous improvement.  Provide technical expertise and leadership to the troubleshooting, problem solving, development, and improvement of critical CMF processes that pose serious risks to safety, environmental, customer, quality, or reliability.
  • Managing the CMF Capital Plan

 

Key Accountabilities:

  • Provide active, visible support for the Plant’s safety program as the highest priority.  Lead CMF to an injury-free work environment through leadership and role modeling safe behaviors and personal attention to and direct involvement in safety activities, including certifying as an IP Safety Leader.
  • Responsible for recruiting, training, and career development for the Manufacturing Excellence & Capital Team.
  • As plantwide cost reduction leader, the person in this position is/will:
    • Assume responsibility for ME R-gap (Realizable Gap) renewal process and closing identified gaps.
    • Work closely with the Finance department to develop the 5-year budget.
    • Utilize ME tools to drive a culture of deliberate improvement and engage employees in participating in cost improvement projects.
  • Ensure there is an ME process to develop engineering technical solutions and address:
    • Capital Projects
    • Continuous Improvement Projects
    • Deliberate Improvement Projects, including DMAIC Projects
    • Quality Incidents (both internal and external) and other critical customer needs as requested
  • Help structure focus teams for high priority projects and facilitate their completion.  (Regular Plant, Technology, and Supply Chain interface for certain key projects.)
  • Develop and implement a strategy to organize CMF equipment documents and records and integrate to IP documentation standards
  • Become the Plant expert in locating IP Engineering standards
  • Provide regular updates to Corporate Capital Management sponsors
  • Serve as primary liaison with CMF’s Regional Engineering Organization
  • Collaborate with CMF Leadership to provide the right Plant support to each capital project
  • Manage projects ranging from $10,000 to $5,000,000 each.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related field
  • High level of analytical knowledge and the ability to apply analysis techniques to product and process improvement projects.
  • Qualified candidates have strong leadership skills focused on accountability and results, and have strong organization and planning skills
  • Highly effective communication and interpersonal skills are required.
  • Experience using Lean principles, leading, and implementing change in a manufacturing environment
  • Able to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables
  • Excellent skills in Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Visio etc…), MiniTab

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ten (10) or more years of manufacturing experience
  • ME Green Belt or higher
