Shift Lead

Reports to

Plant Superintendent

Job Purpose

To ensure safety, production and quality expectations are met

To ensure all safety processes and policies are followed daily based on EHS and OSHA guidelines

To ensure all production processes, policies and standards are met

To execute daily objectives established by management by directing production employees and monitoring progress of assigned task

To lead plant Safety Committee designed to improve safe working environment by implementing processes and training

Member of plant leadership team and a role model for employees regarding on-the-job behavior, integrity, fairness and positive work attitudes

As functional Safety Coordinator, to ensure all plant EHS and OSHA documents are completed and maintained


Umbrella responsibilities of all employees:

  • Adhering to Company and Plant policies and guidelines
  • Working safely and looking out for the safety of those around them
  • Following Plant Procedures
  • Maintaining a safe and clean work environment according to plant housekeeping standards
  • Attending and participating in Plant safety meetings.
  • Reporting any safety or maintenance concerns
  • To lead plant Safety Committee designed to improve safe working environment by implementing processes and training
  • Track and record all Safety training and compliance concerns for Plant
  • Assist in the identification and evaluating of working conditions and practices in a manufacturing and warehousing environment
  • Conduct and coordinate on-site inspections to audit physical conditions and safe work practice
  • Measure and evaluate the effectiveness of hazard control systems, policies and procedures and recommend changes to eliminate work place incidents
  • Facilitate training related to health, safety and environmental compliance
  • Compile and report accident loss and exposure data



  1. Key Responsibilities
  • Must have good interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ensure plant meets all EHS and OSHA guidelines
  • Ensure all EHS, OSHA and safety documents are completed in a timely and accurate manner
  • Lead the Plant Safety Committee to improve plant safe working environment
  • Ensure that plant employees are working in a safe manner
  • Must conduct daily toolbox meetings when plant management is not available
  • Ensures the correct methods and procedures are followed and remain compliant with Employee Handbook at all times
  • Assign daily production duties to plant personnel in the absence of management
  • Ensure daily reports are accurately completed and submitted as required
  • Ensure inventory levels are at or below target levels
  • Ensure that bales are inspected and monitored for any quality, integrity or downgrade issues
  • Ensure that trailer unloading meets quality and accuracy requirements as well as the 48 hour turn-around time from full to empty. 
  • Ensure rail cars are loaded on-time per the rail load schedule.
  • Ensure daily plant housekeeping meets plant standards by coordinating housekeeping activities
  • Must be able to work multiple shifts and/or weekends
  • Ensure daily PM sheets are completed
  • Maintain teamwork atmosphere for all employees
  • Coordinates all activities for assigned area to include employee’s understanding of duties, shifting manpower needs, communicating of time constraints & assignments, completing supporting operational paperwork for all areas
  • Performs inspection of wrap-up activities and attends briefings with Supervisor and Plant Manager, to review operational concerns
  • Maintains smooth, continuous, efficient operation, assisting team in any function/role as needed
  • Ensure plant member adherence to all policies, rules and requirements; coach team members as appropriate
  • Other duties as assigned

    • Good interpersonal and communication skills
    • Proven commitment to safety and safety process
    • Experience meeting and implementing OSHA guidelines
    • Experience in process development
    • Must be able to multi-task and problem solve
    • Must have time management/planning/organizing skills
    • Must have behavior flexibility to adapt to changing work demands and priorities.

    • Baler
    • In-feed Conveyors
    • Loader

  • Plant Training maintained and documented
  • Environmental, Health and Safety documents completed as required
  • Communicate and document all contractor and visitor training
  • Ensure PM sheets are completed, signed, and turned into management
  • Communicate PM needs to Manager and Superintendant
  • Communicate any injuries, near-miss opportunities, or building damage immediately to management

    • PIT training
    • Loader training
    • Lockout/ tag out
