Structural Designer

We currently have an opening for a Structural Designer that will support our DFW Complex, as well as other plants in the Texas Region.  The DFW Complex facility manufactures corrugated packaging products for local and national customers.  This position reports to the DFW Complex Design Manager.

Purpose

The Packaging Design position develops innovative, cost effective and structurally sound packaging solutions. As an active part of the Sales organization, this position exists to provide effective solutions to exceed customer needs and expectations.  This position is responsible to creatively approach the challenges brought forth to provide solutions that not only meet the expected criteria but also ensure effective plant productivity and profitability.

Scope

Create packaging solutions to increase IP’s profitability, market share and competitive advantage. Position impacts the business ROI by developing design solutions that impact the corrugator’s ability to run efficiently, converting machine efficiencies and customer satisfaction. Must liaison with internal technical organizations, sales, customer service, manufacturing, management and customers.

Key Accountabilities

  •             Interacts with Account Executives and customers to ascertain design needs and objectives. Communicates with production, sales and customers to establish and evaluate design concepts for packaging products. Evaluates feasibility of design ideas, based on factors such as appearance, safety, function, serviceability, budget, costs/methods. Present designs and reports to customers for approval, and discuss need for modification.
  •             Ideation/concept development for existing and new clients; prototype development. Fabricates or coordinates the fabrication of samples in corrugated using hand or power tools. Modify and refine designs, using working samples, to conform to customer specifications, or production limitations.
  • Analyze product failure data and laboratory test results in order to determine causes of problems and develop solutions.          Researches production specifications, costs, production materials and manufacturing methods, and provide cost estimates and itemized production requirements. Recommend improvements to work methods or procedures.      
  • Works collaboratively with Graphic Designers and Sales to develop customer solutions.
  • Provides customers and sales with prototypes of designs to ensure acceptance of solutions. Utilize the Arden Impact CAD software and the entire division design support organization to achieve end results.
  •             Produces samples and mock ups using various techniques and skills such as Drafting (2D/3D), Foam Core model making, various knife tools and cutting tables (Kongsberg/DataTech Tables); create promotional materials.
  •             Responsible for project development record keeping, file naming/part numbering, utilizing project management system.   
  •             Use retail environment awareness and knowledge of specifications and guidelines.
  •             Communicate development path to Account Executives and customers as needed.
  •             Participate in or lead project review meetings with Sales, Project management and other designers.
  •             Assist with presentation of abstract ideas, and provide technical support to Sales staff as needed.
  •                         Use computer aided drafting or design (CAD) software for designing packaging systems or other engineering tasks.
  •             Reads publications, attend showings, and study competing products and design styles to obtain perspective and generate design concepts.
  •                         Complies with all safety policies, practices and procedures.
  •             Participates in developing customer relationships by utilizing creative, technical and selling skills.
  •             Performs other duties as assigned.
     

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Design, Packaging Design, Design Engineering or specialized Engineering Degree based in mechanical engineering disciplines from an accredited institution is required.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  May require the ability to write routine reports and correspondence.  May require the ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.  Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of and basic computer skills, and a proficiency in IMPACT CAD software, as well as Microsoft Office.
  • This position requires mechanical aptitude, the ability to convey concepts with quick sketches and creative 3D problem solving skills.  Good verbal, written and graphics communications skill are also required.  This position needs a highly developed sense of aesthetics as well as engineering ability and an advanced understanding of how things work. The ability to drive projects to completion in a fast paced, deadline driven environment is a requirement.  This position will work both independently and as part of a team and requires a helpful and cooperative attitude, and the ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Detail oriented and thorough in completing work tasks.
  • Travel, may be required, for customer support, training, meetings, and manufacturing and assembly plant support.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience operating a sample cutting table
