The Job You Will Perform:
Rail Carrier Managers are responsible for maintaining business relationships with external transportation providers and ensuring that these carriers are providing the expected services at a competitive price. The role is responsible for transportation (Rail) at specific operating sites and is responsible to secure and maintain a stable, responsive, and optimized transportation solution for the assigned mills/facilities. This role supports sourcing events, utilizing a strategic sourcing process, including market analysis, financial analysis, risk mitigation and optimization analysis. This position has full responsibility for transportation that includes the following components: sourcing, operations, carrier performance, and cost management. Daily interactions occur with carriers, Transportation Planners, Logistics Analysts, Mill PS&D departments, and the COE.
Key Responsibilities:
- Partner with the Containerboard Supply Chain to analyze shipping patterns and service requirements to achieve the lowest cost transportation solution
- Negotiate and contract the best value-added transportation cost (price / service / capacity) while following the Strategic Sourcing process
- Seek cost reduction opportunities through negotiations, demurrage/detention cost mitigation, equipment optimization, cost avoidance projects & pursue total cost of ownership savings
- Maintain Strategic Carrier partnership relationships
- Monitor and manage carrier activity to ensure consistency with carrier’s contractual commitments and take corrective action to resolve discrepancies
- Transportation damage claims evaluation and resolution
- Maintain Carrier profile, contract documentation and rates in Blue Yonder
- This position creates and continuously improves an environment where our carrier base views International Paper as a partner of choice
Key Challenges:
- Ability to learn quickly in a dynamic business environment
- Ability to navigate through multiple networks to understand business requirements and how to achieve the lowest cost transportation solution
- Understanding of cost mitigation efforts related to demurrage and other supplemental charges
- Understanding the competitive atmosphere of the transportation market and how to best manage it for the benefit of International Paper including service solutions, risk, and alternatives
- Maintaining an acceptable level of carrier performance with focus on continuously improving service and capacity assurance
- Work with various functional groups within the enterprise to find balanced solutions to complex problems
- Large size and scope of operations and carrier partnership
- Large internal stakeholder group and required communication
- Ability to manage multi-mode projects
Scope:
- Up to $100MM of the total Transportation Spend
- Management of locations and number of contracts varies depending on assigned facility and carrier responsibility
- Manage outbound transportation for finished products, inbound recycled fiber, and transportation responsibilities for a combination of mills, warehouse’s, box plants, and recycling facilities
- Contract switching or spotting assessment and management
The Skills You Will Bring:
- Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain or related field
- 2 years of transportation or supply chain experience
- Excellent organizational skills and time management
- Experience with financial and operational analytics
- Ability to informally lead and train team members
- Experience with contract negotiation and sourcing desired
- Experience leading process improvement projects
- Demonstrated record of achieving results as a self-starter
- Excellent communication skills written and verbal
- Excellent computer skills – Microsoft Office Applications, SAP, Blue Yonder
- Industry / Lean Certification - desired
