The role of this position is to protect the global assets, employees, earnings, and production capacity of International Paper from physical loss resulting from fires, natural catastrophes, manufacturing process problems, employee error, and other causes, while ensuring compliance with applicable Company policies, building codes, and jurisdictional authorities. We refer to this as “Property Conservation.” This position leads various corporate initiatives geared toward reducing risk of unplanned downtime or damage, and acts as a global consultant with Global Technology, Manufacturing, EHS and the business units, using knowledge of Company manufacturing processes and equipment, along with specialized fire protection and loss prevention engineering principles, education, and experience, to identify, analyze, and mitigate loss of property and/or interruption of business operations exceeding Company risk tolerance.  This position is also responsible for maintaining and updating the Company Property Conservation Manual as codes and standards are updated by various authorities, including FM Global.

 

Key deliverables include: consulting on the design, upgrade, or modification of Company facilities (mainly capital projects); providing direction to internal customers; managing the activity of vendors such as engineering design firms, insurance company engineers, and contractors to assure project compliance with Property Conservation guidelines, building and fire codes, and insurance company requirements; developing policies, procedures, and training tools to reduce risk exposures and increase internal awareness of and compliance with loss prevention programs; assist in the investigation, measurement, and negotiation of property and business interruption claims.

 

The Job You Will Perform:

  • Champion risk reduction and property conservation compliance on a global basis, via evaluation of exposures and insurance company engineering recommendations, as well as prioritization and support of related capital projects and employee training programs.
  • Work with project and capital managers to improve the property conservation effectiveness of various capital projects, including targeted projects intended to reduce risk. Assist with project specifications and requirements, and act as a reviewer/approver during the FEL process.
  • Develop property protection design criteria for worldwide construction and capital projects to ensure facilities are adequately protected in a cost-effective manner and in compliance with applicable codes, insurance company standards and internal standards.
  • Partner with Global Technology in key areas, including:
    • Lead segments of recovery/power boiler safety audits, which are conducted by cross-functional teams from Technology and other mills.
    • Lead the review of burner management systems, including oversight of team members. 
  • Manage global property insurance company activities to ensure value-added and cost effective support of risk reduction and property conservation
  • Develop and maintain corporate policy and practices, author internal communications to provide current and relevant property conservation information to worldwide facilities.

 

The Skills You Will Bring:

  • An engineering degree or an equivalent technical degree with a minimum of eight years’ experience in the field of property loss prevention and protection, preferably in forest products or similar heavy manufacturing industries.
  • Requires minimal assistance to:
  • Make timely decisions
  • Solve complex problems
  • Provide high quality and cost effective service to internal customers and internal/external business partners
  • Coordinate internal resources and outside vendors related to large projects, while effectively managing capital expenditures
  • Review bids and discuss contractor pricing
  • Prioritize and plan multiple tasks
  • Able to effectively communicate with, present to, and influence all levels of  internal and external customers and business partners.
  • Strongly prefer familiarity with burner management systems on fuel-fired equipment, as well as the safe firing and Emergency Shutdown Procedure systems on black liquor recovery boilers and large power boilers.
  • Requires 50-60% of time traveling to facilities and meetings.
  • Ability to tolerate heights, extreme temperatures, confined spaces and excessive noise.
  • International travel.
