Environmental, Health and Safety Engineer

The Riverdale Mill is currently seeking an EHS Engineer in the Environment, Health, and Safety (EHS) Department 

Position Scope:

The EHS Engineer is a developmental role in the mill’s EHS organization and flexes as needed to support overall safety and environmental improvement efforts, including technical support, field work, training activities, and compliance monitoring, among others.  Riverdale Mill, located in Selma AL, is a complex, fully integrated pulp and paper manufacturing facility with two machines, one producing Brite Top liner and one producing uncoated free sheet.  In addition to the machines, the mill includes multiple process lines, including wood handling, pulping, power and recovery, sheeting operations and effluent treatment.  The mill’s EHS department supports the safety of nearly 750 team members as well as environmental stewardship in air, water, and other compliance areas.  The EHS engineer has no directs and reports to the EHS Manager.

 

Position Responsibilities:

  • Participate in health, safety and environmental system improvements
  • Conduct industrial hygiene exposure assessments, safety inspections, safe work observations, and other routine safety physical and system audits as part of the overall mill program
  • Participate in learning events, safety committees, local and regional EHS best practice teams
  • Both lead and participate in safety investigations to develop skills both personally and within the organization for effective root cause and corrective action identification
  • Conduct safety and environmental training, and also work to review and improve training material annually
  • Monitor safety and health performance/trends and recommend actions for improvement
  • Monitor health of environmental system and associated process equipment
  • Develop new and improve existing tools for managing compliance, margin, raw material consumption, and cost to own and operate our environmental systems (procedures, checklists, equipment training, etc.)
  • Review and improve PI and other process management systems specifically related to EHS performance
  • Collaborate with employees and supervisors to identify and correct potential safety and health hazards.
  • Collaborate with company and industry experts to improve Safety and Environmental systems/performance
  • Develop safe standard work practices with line personnel
  • Review new products and equipment as part of continuous improvement in EHS performance
  • Review and understand key components of mill safety programs and environmental permits
  • Support department leads in EHS program improvement activities
  • Work with permitting consultants and compliance agencies on permitting tasks or other compliance discussions.
  • Develop safety and environmental communications to engage mill team in overall improvement effort
  • Participate in a weekend duty team as an EHS resource

    Required Experience:
  • B.S. degree in Safety/Environmental Science or ChE related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in a manufacturing environment, preferably in an EHS related field.
  • Must have good knowledge and understanding of applicable OSHA laws and regulations.
  • Must have strong technical skills in the EHS area, and experience with or ability to quickly develop skills in PI, Proficy, MyLearning Content Development, PowerPoint and Excel.
  • Must have strong influencing and leadership skills. Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate, drive for results, and influence change.
