Health & Safety Environmental Manager
Description:
The HSE Manager is the leader of the Health, Safety, and Environmental programs, policies, and procedures for a fully integrated pulp and paper mill. The HSE Manager is responsible for all facets of day-to-day operations for the safety department (including fire safety and fire systems), environmental department, the central lab, landfill operations, and the wastewater treatment plant, including the constructed wetlands. This includes responsibility for safety, environmental compliance, employee engagement, hourly team development, process productivity, efficiency, area financial performance, and quality for the HSE department. Additionally, the HSE manager interfaces directly with community leaders and regulatory agencies to represent the mill within the community and region. This position reports directly to the Mill Manager and is a member of the mill’s lead team. The HSE Manager has responsibility for 3-8 hourly and 6 salaried team members.
Key Accountabilities:
- Demonstrate and champion safety leadership above all things and at all times.
- Ensure environmental compliance systems are reliable and accurate.
- Champion a safety culture consistent with the IP Safety Above All Else standards by ensuring all levels of the HSE teams are performing their jobs safely and are motivated to own leadership in safety, work systems, and positive member relations. Support broad based participation in the mill’s safety process.
- Strive to establish and achieve challenging budgets to deliver year over year savings. Gain maximum value for the dollars invested. Be an active member and leader of mill cost reduction team initiatives.
- Responsible for recruitment, training and development of early career talent.
- Provide leadership to the Health, Safety and Environmental team.
- Develop and nurture a team based organization committed to employee participation and team work. Utilize CSA process to align initiatives to personal objectives.
- Hold meaningful one-to-one discussions with members of the Technical team, set expectations and hold both teams and individuals accountable for results.
- Manage and control departmental costs within budget.
Qualifications:
- A bachelor’s degree in occupational health and safety or technical discipline with significant related experience and exposure to OSHA general industry requirements. CSP and/or CIH certifications preferred.
- 10+ years Engineering experience, preferably in a Manufacturing environment.
- Qualified candidates have strong transformational leadership skills focused on accountability and results and have strong organization and planning skills.
- Highly effective communication and interpersonal skills are required.
- Demonstrated ability to build and lead cross-functional teams including knowledge of basic facilitation techniques.
- Clear ability to manage and coordinate multiple projects and deadlines.
- Experience with six-sigma (or other process improvement methodologies) and change management processes.
