Finished Products Area Process Manager - Paper

 

Position Description:

The Area Process Manager Paper is a leadership position in the Vicksburg Mill’s Finished Products department and reports to the Finished Products Business Unit Manager. The Area Manager’s role is to provide leadership to the paper machine team and operating shift crews to achieve the mill and Finished Products Department objectives, and facilitate sound business decisions. This position is responsible for the production of quality paper and oversees the paper machine and stock prep areas. The Finished Products Area Manager is accountable for setting the paper machine department vision, establishing short and long-term expectations and budgets, and facilitating operating and improvement plans designed at meeting and exceeding the department’s safety, environmental, productivity, quality, and cost goals.

 

Position Requirements: 

  • Must ensure their team works safely in an industrial environment, and consistently demonstrates model safety behavior, is a safety leader, and encourages safety engagement
  • Lead Vicksburg to an accident and injury-free work environment through leadership by example, modeling safe behavior, and supporting established safety initiatives
  • Demonstrate leadership in engagement by partnering with the crews and shift managers to develop an action-based engagement plan and assure a highly motivated workforce
  • Provide leadership, clear direction, and develop personal accountability to maintain a satisfactory work environment for all employees. Treat each employee with respect and dignity, and hold others to the same standard
  • Hold meaningful one-to-one discussions with members of the Paper machine and stock prep team; set clear expectations for both team and individuals
  • Create a department vision and guiding principles
  • Set and maintain high standards in housekeeping.  Establish standards and specific expectations and make frequent inspections. Hold operators accountable for housekeeping.
  • Work with Paper Maintenance leadership in coordination of day-to-day maintenance activities and manage a prioritized daily and outage work order backlog.
  • Responsible for the successful planning and execution of all capital projects.      
  • Provide leadership to troubleshoot operating and maintenance issues through MWS and a strong basic care system
  • Responsible for cost control of all aspects of the Paper Machine; direct and lead all manufacturing activities on the operating line in a manner that meets or exceed performance, reliability and budget expectations
  • Coach, manage, lead, support and develop approximately 50 production employees on the paper machine and in the stock prep area
  • Use GMTI principles to ensure a highly trained workforce knowledgeable of the process and equipment; ensure that training systems are in place and utilize to develop the workforce
  • Provide customer focus and leadership to develop new grades and improve current grades
  • Ensure paper property specifications and roll quality standards are met and / or exceeded
  • Continuously improve the operation by staying current with new technologies, implementing best practices, identifying non-value added elements and modeling continuous process improvement
  • Facilitate integrated action plans for productivity and cost goal attainment
  • Support the goals and initiatives of all departments of the Mill

 

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in Paper or Pulp Manufacturing
  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering, Management or related field is strongly preferred; equivalent education / experience combination is required
  • The successful candidate will have a thorough knowledge of paper mill equipment and systems, and is capable of being a technical resource for paper machine and stock prep employees
  • Demonstrated record of safety and environmental commitment and results
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate to groups and individuals at all levels
  • Understands and utilizes the principles necessary to achieve and maintain a high performance organization
  • Strong leadership skills focused on accountability and results
  • Desire to work with maintenance as a team
  • Strong commitment to reliability and to the use of Manufacturing Excellence tools / work systems to ensure sustainability of progress
