Salary Range ($101,000-$134,600) - Multiple factors, including Individual experience, skills, and abilities will determine where an employee is ultimately placed in the pay range. Variable pay may provide additional opportunities for financial awards. This job is eligible to participate in IP’s short–term incentive plan.
The Job You Will Perform: The Valliant is a 5,000+ ton per day containerboard mill with three (3) paper machines, three (3) continuous digesters, three (3) secondary Fiber plants and a utilities/chemical recovery complex. It currently operates with 350+ mill employees, 150+ contract maintenance employees in a results oriented environment.
The Health & Safety (H&S) Manager is responsible for developing, implementing, and sustaining a proactive health and safety culture. This role ensures compliance with all regulatory requirements and company policies while fostering continuous improvement through employee engagement, risk identification, and robust incident prevention strategies. The H&S Manager provides guidance and leadership as a subject matter expert on safety, occupational health standards, and risk assessment at the mill. This roles reports directly to the HSE Manager and is responsible for leading direct reports.
Key Functions (include but not limited to):
- Lead the development and execution of site-wide health, safety, and security strategies, aligned with corporate objectives and regulatory standards (OSHA, DEQ etc.).
- Champion Human & Organizational Performance (HOP) principles to drive learning, accountability, and operational resilience.
- Conduct and support hazard identification, risk assessments, and job safety analyses (JSAs) across departments.
- Monitor compliance and performance through audit and inspection programs and data analysis; recommend corrective actions and improvements.
- Collaborate with operations, maintenance, and engineering teams to ensure safety is integrated into all processes, especially during shutdowns, capital projects, and high-risk work.
- Support incident investigations using root cause methodologies and ensure timely closure of corrective actions.
- Ensure development, training, and execution of Emergency Response Team, including interior structural fire, confined space/high angle rescue, and hazardous material.
- Lead and facilitate injury case management.
- Provide safety training, coaching, and onboarding for all levels of staff and contractors.
- Facilitate safety committees and employee engagement activities to improve safety culture and frontline ownership.
The Skills You Will Bring:
- Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Engineering, or related field.
- Minimum 5 years of progressive safety leadership experience in manufacturing; pulp and paper or heavy industry experience preferred.
- In-depth knowledge of OSHA regulations, including, but not limited to PSM, LOTO, confined space, and contractor safety management.
- Strong analytical, communication, and leadership skills.
- Possess a clear ability to manage and coordinate multiple tasks.
- Demonstrated ability to build teams and work in a team environment.
- Basic meeting, facilitation, and listening skills, along with an established ability to manage change and conflict.
- Good interpersonal skills and ability to influence, lead and manage safety in the pursuit of a physically and mentally safe work environment.
- Possess good oral and written communication skills.
- Certified Safety Professional (CSP), CIH, or equivalent designation preferred.
- Experience with HOP implementation or similar safety culture transformation frameworks is a strong asset.
