Front Line Leader - Pulp

The Pulp FLL will report to the Business Unit Manager.  The successful candidate has a strong knowledge and experience working in a power plant and/or recovery operations.   Experience as a First Line Leader is a plus.


Key Accountabilities:

  1. Supports and leads efforts at the New Bern Mill that include an injury-free environment through role modeling safe behavior, active involvement in safety activities and maintaining a clean and orderly work environment
  2. Completes the First Line Leader (FLL) Onboarding/Proficiency Curriculum and Safety Leadership Certification 
  3. Manages a shift of hourly operators in the Utilities department; keeps all necessary equipment functioning to meet mill needs
  4. Coordinates and leads efforts to support high performance work teams
  5. Leadership role in ensuring team member relations, efforts, and processes are in place to maximize team member engagement and results
  6. Leads, provides guidance, and/or supports teams as needed to achieve team goals, daily responsibilities, and overall achievement of mill goals
  7. Manages daily shift operations in their assigned area and a focus on continuous improvement
  8. Provides feedback, coaching, support and, when necessary, take corrective measures, to ensure all team members have a positive, productive, and safe work environment
  9. Communicates as needed with team members and mill leadership for resolution of safety, quality, reliability, cost, production, and personnel issues
  10. Communicates and lead the application of facility policies and standards
  11. Hold meaningful one-to-one discussions with members of the utilities crew; set clear expectations for both team and individuals and motivate team members to strive for success
  12. Provide leadership to troubleshoot operation issues
  13. Develops, maintains, and supports use of reliable methods for all processes and their improvements.
  14. Maintains and develops team relationships
  15. Manage Lockout/ Hot Work, Process Break and Vessel entry programs


 Knowledge and Experience:



  • Working knowledge and experience in power plants and/or recovery operations
  • Demonstrated and successful leadership ability in a manufacturing environment, including knowledge of and leadership in manufacturing safety practices.
  • Must have a high level of integrity, energy, and leadership ability to develop and lead others.
  • Demonstrated and successful ability to lead and continuously improve team performance in order to promote an injury-free work environment, provide a quality product, and achieve world class productivity in support of a high performance work system.
  • Effective oral and written communications skills with proven ability to provide positive and improvement feedback, coaching opportunities, and take corrective measures as appropriate.


  • College Degree Preferred
  • Strong computer skills required
  • Experience working power plant or recovery operations
  • Excellent skills in organizing, planning, priority setting, and time management, with proven ability to adapt to sudden changes in the work environment
  • Ability to effectively facilitate problem solving or conflict resolution processes.
