The Job You Will Perform:

 

Description

International Paper is currently seeking a Front Line leader (Power & Recovery) to join our team at the Grande Prairie Operation. The Grande Prairie mill is a 1000+ tons per day Northern Bleached Softwood Kraft pulp mill.  It currently operates with approximately 400 mill employees in a high performance, results oriented environment.

 

Role:

The Front Line Leader is responsible for a shift team to develop and continually improve the function of their crew relating to all aspects of: health and safety; environment; quality; uptime value; continuous improvement; procedures/policies; and best operating practices.  This is an on-shift position following the Compressed Work Week Schedule.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Role model safety behavior and intervene to maintain an injury free workplace
  • Responsible for all health and safety aspects of their crew, including training, meetings, compliance, audits, observations and records
  • Direct supervisor of the operating personnel within the steam plant, liquor cycle (recovery and recaust) as well as waste and water treatment area
  • Work with the Department Learning Leader promoting staff development ensuring employees have the required skills, means and resources to carry out their tasks safely and in conformity with the Operating Engineer’s Act
  • Direct supervisor of the shift trades people when they are completing work in their area of responsibility
  • Responsible for the performance of the Power and Recovery shift team including meeting targets, setting expectations, coaching, mentoring, training, communicating and direction as required
  • Monitor and approve hourly team member’s schedule and work time through Work Brain
  • Lead safety investigations and performance management
  • Provide on-shift leadership in safety, environment, quality and production
  • Conduct effective one-to-one discussions twice per year for one shift team
  • Engage all team members in the development and continuous improvement of work practices, procedures, equipment and knowledge to optimize the team’s efficiency
  • Ensure a high level of communication with other departments and supervisors in an effort to make the best decisions for the mill and for International Paper
  • Report any problems or serious needs that should be addressed to pass on to relieving Shift personnel - must be an effective communicator
  • First line of defense in case of a Major Mill Emergency. Assume role of Incident Commander or support role for other staff supervisors (Pulp Mill or Paper) in the event of an emergency
  • Provide support and coordinate unplanned and planned maintenance outages
  • Some overtime is required

 

Organizational Responsibility:

  • Position reports to the Power Superintendent - Steam and Recovery

 

Qualifications:

  • 2nd Class Power Engineering Ticket required
  • Kraft/Pulp mill experience is an asset
  • Supervisory experience is required

  • Advanced experience, knowledge and understanding of safe work practices.
  • Well developed and demonstrated supervisory and leadership skills in a high performance work system with focus on safety, environment and quality and maintenance practices.
  • Thorough knowledge of the Operating Engineers Act.
  • Knowledge of recovery cycle processes as well as Steam and Utilities systems, equipment and procedures.
  • Ability to prioritize, make sound decisions, and resolve issues efficiently and effectively.
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively.
  • Strong organizational and planning skills, with the ability to multi-task.
  • Analytical, critical thinking and proven problem solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team.
  • Results focused and detail-oriented.
  • Excellent computer skills - working knowledge of Parcview, PI and SAP would be an asset.
