Position Scope:

 

The Mechanical Reliability Leader is the lead mechanical reliability position in the facility and manages the mechanical reliability organization and its efforts across the entire mill. Riverdale Mill, located in Selma AL, is a complex, fully integrated pulp and paper manufacturing facility with two machines, one producing Brite Top liner and one producing uncoated free sheet. In addition to the machines, the mill includes multiple process lines, including wood handling, pulping, power and recovery, sheeting operations and effluent treatment. The MRL is responsible for developing a team of highly skilled reliability engineers and hourly reliability technicians tasked with successfully executing all reliability elements, including the RCFA process, preventive and predictive maintenance (PM/PdM), mechanical (MPM), lubrication excellence, and world class MWS processes, among others. The MRL is also responsible for tracking and reporting on key metrics, communicating those metrics to the mill team, and using a data based approach to develop reliability strategies to ensure the mill performs at world class reliability levels. Finally, this position ensures alignment with company reliability programs, and also the implementation of new or improved reliability systems to ensure all progress is sustained. This position reports to the Maintenance Improve Manager and has approximately 10 salaried and 15 hourly reliability technicians within the organization.

 

The Job You Will Perform:

 

  • Reduce unscheduled downtime to world class levels, both reducing cost and improving mill stability/efficiency
  • Champion reliability efforts across the mill, including communication of the compelling case for mechanical reliability to all hourly and salaried team members
  • Lead role in ensuring the health of reliability systems such as Lubrication, PM/PdM, MPM, and RCFA
  • Organize mechanical reliability team to ensure reliability excellence, in terms of staff size, reliability element ownership/assignments, and functional/technical skill development of both the engineering and technician staff
  • Equipment inspection programs and efforts including routine PM, tear down inspections, and rebuilds, as well as NDT of tanks and pressure vessels, structural inspections and piping inspections
  • Preventable chronic failure (PCF) program champion
  • Tactical support for operations and maintenance for failure analysis, repair and performance improvements
  • Develop and maintain equipment criticalities used in the operating areas
  • Equipment care development leader, with heavy influence on inspectors’ activities, routes, and ability to identify early failure indicators using proven techniques.
  • Seek out and implement reliability best practices from across the corporation and industry, including new reliability technologies and predictive techniques
  • Maintain Reliability Action Plan and mill reliability scorecard, communicate results across the mill, and using a data based approach, adjust reliability strategies as necessary to deliver target result

  • High level of understanding of reliability principles, knowledgeable in functional/technical skills of a maintenance professional, CMMS systems, and competent in using Lean tools such as RCFA.
  • Ability to quickly develop thorough knowledge of mill equipment and systems and work across departmental lines to drive results
  • Maintain strong relationships with the Maintenance and Operations business unit managers, area managers, and first line leaders, and challenge the organization to continuously improve
  • Utilize the International Paper Change Process to implement change
  • Ability to effectively organize and handle multiple tasks
  • Systematic thinker with the ability to implement robust systems with associated feedback loops to ensure sustainability within the reliability program

Required Experience:

  • B.S. degree in mechanical, electrical, or chemical engineering preferred
  • 10+ years of experience in a manufacturing environment, preferably in the Pulp and Paper industry
  • 5+ years in Maintenance or Maintenance Engineering
  • 3+ years of experience managing teams
